What Happened

The UK Government Science and Technology Committee has been gathering evidence from experts over the course of 2018. The committee has produced a report that was released on 10/08/2018 and it is good news for vapers in the UK.

The government committee was made up of 11 people from major political parties that reviewed multiple testimonies by experts in many different fields which covered vaping, regulations and health, a final report was then produced.

The committee said – “Against a background of contradictory national policies towards e-cigarettes and disagreement and apparent uncertainty over the health risks, we decided to examine the evidence on the health impacts and on e-cigarettes’ role as a smoking cessation tool. We received over 100 pieces of written evidence and held five oral evidence sessions between January and May 2018, hearing from 25 witnesses.”

The Committee’s Stance On The Safety Of Vaping

“E-cigarettes present an opportunity to significantly accelerate already declining smoking rates. They are substantially less harmful – by around 95% – than conventional cigarettes. They lack the tar and carbon monoxide of conventional cigarettes – the most dangerous components. It has also proven challenging to measure the risks from ‘second-hand’ e-cigarette vapour because it is negligible and substantially less than that of conventional cigarettes.”

This is great news as the government is now accepting the premise that there are no “second-hand smoke” health risks with vaping

Can This Effect Current TPD Legislations?

“Many businesses, public transport providers and other public places do not allow e-cigarettes in the same way they prohibit traditional cigarettes. But, there is no Public health rationale for treating the use of the two products the same”.

Many businesses treat vapers in the same way as smokers, the committee’s report suggests that vaping and smoking should be treated as two separate entities. TPD was also called into question about the current nicotine limits that are imposed in the UK, this will hopefully pave the way for people that want a higher nicotine strength to help them quit smoking, as well as potentially removing the 2ml tank limitations.

The full report shows a government that is keen to lead the world in using vaping as a harm reduction tool. If changes are passed through parliament and accepted, it could mean that there are some great days ahead for vapers and those taking their first steps to a better, healthier lifestyle.
