Bar Salts: E-Liquid Formulations Following the Disposable Ban

With the UK ban on the sale and supply of single-use disposable vapes coming into force on 1 June 2025, the hardware market has transitioned strictly to reusable formats. To accommodate adult users moving away from pre-filled, single-use devices, manufacturers developed a specific category of e-liquid known as bar salts.

For adult vapers navigating refillable hardware for the first time, understanding the chemical structure of bar salts is helpful for choosing a formulation that is compatible with their device and replicating the operational style of a disposable unit.

The Technical Definition of Bar Salts

Bar salts are a distinct sub-category of nicotine salt e-liquids. They are formulated using a specific chemical structure where freebase nicotine is bonded with a mild acid (such as salicylic acid or benzoic acid).

Flavour Concentration: What differentiates bar salts from standard e-liquids is a significantly higher concentration of food-grade flavourings and sweeteners. They are engineered specifically to replicate the strong, immediate flavour delivery that was characteristic of single-use disposable devices.

Nicotine Delivery: The chemical salt formulation lowers the pH level of the liquid. This allows for a smoother inhalation and a smoother inhale than many traditional freebase liquids, even at the maximum nicotine concentrations legally permitted in the UK (20mg/ml).

Environmental Impact and Reusable Hardware

The 2025 ban on single-use devices was heavily driven by environmental concerns, as the volume of lithium-ion batteries and plastic chassis entering the waste stream raised significant concerns. By transitioning to bar salts, adult vapers utilise reusable pod systems. Reusable pod systems may generate less electronic waste than single-use disposable devices because the battery is retained and recharged rather than discarded after use.

Hardware Compatibility Specifications

Because bar salts are formulated with a 50/50 PG/VG ratio, they are relatively thin liquids. They are strictly designed for Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) vaping and must be paired with low-wattage hardware, such as refillable pod systems or pen devices. Operating bar salts in high-wattage sub-ohm devices may result in excessive nicotine delivery, severe throat irritation, and potential hardware malfunction due to leaking.
